The 5th Moon month, the Dragon Moon is still waxing as July opens. The Full Dragon Moon falls on the 6th, the Last Quarter Dragon Moon on the 15th. The 6th Moon month the Lotus Moon is New on the 22nd. The Lotus Moon climbs to her First Quarter on the 28th.

Many ancient pagan faiths revere the sun, and so solar symbolism surrounds many deities, from the Greek Apollo, to red faced Mars of Rome and the Daghda, ‘the beautiful fire’ of Ireland. The Chinese sun god is not pre-eminent, but a strange cosmological myth has survived: the earth is flat and the sky a dome stretching over it. The sun, moon and stars are all within the dome, and beyond it is an immeasurable void. There is not just one sun but ten, and they are all the children of a single mother.

In the early morning, the first sun, named the ‘duty sun,’ emerges from the Valley of Light at the eastern end of the world. It is bathed by its mother in the lake which borders the valley. There is an enormous tree by the lake called ‘fu-sang’ or ‘khung-sang, which means ‘hollow mulberry.’ The freshly bathed duty sun climbs to the tree’s topmost branch. Then the other nine suns emerge from the lake one at a time and are bathed by their mother. As soon as it is washed, each sun climbs into the tree and perches in its lower branches. When the nine suns are safely perched, the duty sun sets off in a chariot drawn by dragons, which is driven by its mother.

Eventually the chariot reaches Mount Yen-tzu in the far west, where the dragons are unyoked. The sun climbs down a tree called ‘jo,’ and into another lake. The implication is that the two lakes are connected and that the sun travels back from west to east under the earth. The myth mentions stages on the sun’s east-west journey, as if some mythographers surmised that each of the ten suns shone for one tenth of the day. Perhaps the ten suns symbolise an early ten hour day, or it could be that the nine perching suns are replacements awaiting their periods of duty in future eras of history. When tumultuous events happen on earth, two or more suns appear together. Once, when all ten shone at once, threatening the earth with firestorms, Yi the Good Archer shot down nine of them with his magic bow. They fell to earth in the form of three footed ravens. This explains why the suns ‘perch’ in a tree. By Nathaniel.
